The Fall Luncheon is one of
two opportunities during the academic year for members of the Phi Kappa
Phi chapter at Truman State to talk about and decide matters important
to the chapter. The setting is informal and friendly, including lunch
and good conversation. At the fall luncheon, the committees that arrange
various aspects of the chapter’s ongoing responsibilities are
announced and volunteers to serve on those committees are requested. The
fall luncheon precedes the fall gathering as a prelude to that important
ceremony.
The Fall Gathering
is an opportunity for the Phi Kappa Phi chapter of Truman State to recognize
student members of the chapter who will graduate in December of that
year. This event is also marked by a lecture given by faculty, alumni,
students, or others with specific areas of expertise and reflecting the broad
range of disciplinary interests in the liberal arts. Following this
event, members and potential members can meet and converse informally
over refreshments.
Each year, two student members of Phi
Kappa Phi serve on Truman State University's Educator of the Year
Selection Committee. The Educator of the Year award is an annual award
"for teachers, by students," and recognizes the achievements
of outstanding educators at Truman.
The Spring Luncheon is the
second opportunity during the academic year for members of the Phi Kappa
Phi chapter at Truman State to discuss and decide matters important to
the chapter. Its format is like that of the Fall Luncheon. The most
important aspect of this meeting is that the Executive Committee
presents the slate of officers (previously contacted), and the slate of
students, faculty, and staff nominated for membership for the approval of the
whole chapter. It precedes the most important event of the academic year
for our campus’s chapter, the Spring Initiation Ceremony.
Phi Kappa Phi hosts the Interdisciplinary
Session of Truman's Student Research Conference each spring.
Presentations for this session are selected by a committee of Phi Kappa
Phi members.
The Spring Initiation Ceremony
is that event in which those students, faculty, and staff invited to join the Phi Kappa Phi chapter of Truman State
University are
inducted into the chapter. Juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and
seniors in the top 10% of their class are invited to join Phi Kappa Phi.
Those who accept this invitation, as well as those faculty and staff
invited who accept the invitation, are formally inducted into the
chapter. The Spring ceremony features a keynote speaker who addresses a
topic relevant to our society and our world, reflecting the range and
breadth of liberal arts learning. This event is often a highlight for
graduating seniors. It is a time when their hard work and achievements
during the Truman career can be recognized. Following the ceremony, new
members, old members, and guests meet and converse informally over
refreshments. In addition, the chapter recognizes an outstanding
Kirksville High School senior at this event.
Among other annual activities, the chapter also
donates $200.00 annually towards books to the Adair County Library, and
provides support for the Magee/Korslund/Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship,
which is awarded annually to a Truman State University junior who is a
member of Phi Kappa Phi.
